What we believe

Control you can understand. And use.

Data sovereignty is about real influence over the use of data. For individuals. For organizations. And in the collaboration between them.

What does data sovereignty mean?

We use the term to mean the ability to understand, influence and set boundaries for how information is used. It takes more than the word ownership: who can decide what must be clarified for the specific information and use.

When you share a need with a supplier, the purpose is to receive a relevant offer. It is not automatically permission to use the information for other purposes.

Four questions a service should be able to answer

Which data?

The information must be visible and understandable, with sources and a way to detect errors.

For what purpose?

It must be clear which task the data should help with, and which other purposes are not included.

Who has access?

Access should follow roles, needs and clarified rights. There is a difference between being able to read and having the right to use.

How do you change a choice?

Correction, ending use and any transfer must be practically possible within the applicable framework.

Control should make usefulness possible.

Too little information can make good collaboration difficult. Too much sharing can expose information that is not needed. We therefore believe good defaults and understandable boundaries are as important as the number of settings.

Data sovereignty is the direction we are building towards. This principles page does not mean that all our services already have self-service export, consent management or revocation. See the specific status in the service, or contact us about your data.
