Why donations still matter
Some valuable work does not fit into a single service purchase. Voluntary support can create room to keep building.

What donations are and are not
Donations can create room for this. They can support the purpose of making data useful for more people and give us the opportunity to examine solutions that are not yet funded through ordinary use.
The trade-off: predictability
At the same time, we want to be clear about what a donation is. It is support for the purpose, not the purchase of a specific service, a promise of a launch date or a route to better placement in recommendations. Donors should not be able to buy access to other users' data.
Donations also have a weakness: they can vary. We therefore want to combine them with payment for services that can cover their development and operations. That provides different ways to contribute, without making independence dependent on only one source of income.
What we must explain
When we ask for support, we should explain what the work is about and how it is developing. It should be easy to understand the choice before continuing to payment, and easy to distinguish a voluntary donation from a subscription.
Separate support from an order
If you want to support a purpose, check who receives the donation, what the stated purpose is and whether you are choosing a single gift or recurring payments. Save the payment confirmation. For recurring support, establish how to stop future payments before you commit.
If you need a particular feature, delivery date or level of service, ask for the relevant product terms instead. A donation should not leave either party guessing whether a commercial promise has been made.
